FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College led by 16 points in the second quarter, then held off a furious rally late in the game to beat Averett University in USA South women's basketball action, winning 79-72 this afternoon at Swartz Gym.

THE BASICS
Ferrum built its biggest lead, 34-18, at 5:18 of the second quarter on
Maggie Self's three-point basket. Averett closed to within two points twice in the waning moments of the game, first on Samm Chandler's three-pointer with 2:16 left to play that made it 69-67, and again with 47 seconds left in regulation on a pair of Chandler free throws that made it 72-70.
Zarkia Mattox overcame early foul trouble and played just 27 minutes, but posted 23 points to lead the Panthers to the win.

Bryan Harvey. "We have really improved over the past couple of weeks, and this afternoon was a hard fought win against a very good Averett team. We had a lot of people contribute to our win today and we had to have it. It was a great weekend for us."

Harvey's team will be back in action with a pair of home games Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 20-21. The Panthers face USA South opponent Greensboro College Saturday at 2:00 p.m., then take on Pfeiffer University Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
