FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College opened its 2018 baseball season with a pair of non-conference losses tonight at home to visiting Christopher Newport University, falling 11-4 in the opener and 9-2 in the nightcap.

THE BASICS
Trailing 2-1 after six innings in the opener, the Captains used a 10-run seventh inning to break the game open en route to taking the season opener for both schools. The Panthers tacked on a run each in the eighth and ninth innings, but that was they could get. Christopher Newport got all it would need in the second inning of game two, scoring four runs to go out in front 4-1, then holding on for the win.

Coach Ryan Brittle's team will be back in action Friday through Sunday, Feb. 16-18, at the Early Spring Classic, hosted by Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia. The Panthers face Birmingham Southern College Friday at 3:00 p.m., Piedmont Saturday at 5:00 p.m. and Virginia Wesleyan College Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
