Big Second Half Lifts Ferrum Past CNU 26-19 in Football

NEWPORT NEWS, Virginia -- Ferrum College outscored Christopher Newport University 16-9 in the second half to earn just the second win in the 15-year series with tonight's 26-19 non-conference football win at Townebank Stadium.

THE BASICS
Adam Luncher's 4-yard run at 3:04 of the first quarter gave CNU a 7-0 lead. Ferrum answered with a 38-yard scoring strike from Titus Jones to Tmahdae Penn at 9:03 of the second quarter.

Ryan Castle put the Captains back on top 10-7 with his 22-yard field goal with 6:04 left in the second quarter. Seth Deaton returned the favor and tied the game at 10-10 when he split the uprights from 19 yards out with no time showing on the clock, and the two teams were deadlocked 10-10 at the break.

Midway through the third quarter, Jones scampered 33 yards up the middle to give Ferrum its first lead of the game, 17-10. Castle closed the third quarter with a 24-yard field goal to trim the lead to 17-13.

Jones then connected with Penn again, this time from five yards out after a 70-yard catch and run from Matthew Montgomery put the Panthers into scoring position, and Ferrum's lead was 23-13 at 10:44 of the fourth quarter. Deaton added a 24-yard field goal with 2:58 left to make it a 26-13 game 

Christopher Newport's Matt Dzierski hit Chase Kelly with a 19-yard touchdown pass with 21 seconds left in regulation, then the Panthers recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock.

Coach Cleive Adams' team will be back in action Saturday, September 25, at home against the Apprentice School. The non-conference game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff at W.B. Adams Stadium.
