Panther Men Beat Southern Virginia 2-0

FERRUM, Virginia -- Ferrum College's men's soccer team earned a non-conference win over Southern Virginia University this afternoon at home, winning 2-0 at Penn-Roediger Field. It was the season opener for both teams.

RECORDS
Ferrum (1-0)
Southern Virginia (0-1)

THE BASICS
The two teams played to a scoreless draw in the first half. Jonathan Nicacio put Ferrum on the scoreboard first when he redirected a Callum Harrison corner kick from the left side past Southern Virginia goalkeeper Dallin Chappell in the 58th minute of play.

Jadon Brooks made it a 2-0 game on a great build-up play that started down the right channel and ended with Nicacio feeding the ball to Brooks, who had a first time finish to the bottom right corner. Goalkeeper Dillon Ghosh made the most of his first career start at Ferrum, making six saves to get the win.

KEY STATS
Ferrum: Nicacio 1 goal, 1 asst; GK Ghosh (W, 1-0) 90 min, 6 saves
Southern Virginia: GK Chappell 22 min, 0 saves; GK Treyden Stringham (L, 0-1) 67 min, 10 saves

BEHIND THE WHISTLE
"A 2-0 win and a clean sheet in the season opener, we'll take that result. Overall, we have a lot to work on. We were not clinical enough in the final third and needed to put the game away earlier. Southern Virginia caused problems in transition and ultimately, not putting away our chance's almost came back to bite us. In the end though, we started seven new players and showed some bright moments. We will regroup and continue to build off of what we learned today and come back stronger." --Head Coach Matt Cureton

NEXT UP
Coach Matt Cureton's team will be back in action Sunday, September 3, at Pfeiffer University. The non-conference game gets underway at 5:00 p.m. in Misenheimer, North Carolina, following the Ferrum-Pfeiffer women's game.
