ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Ferrum College placed fourth at the Mount Union Invitational, hosted by University of Mount Union today at Peterson Field House. The tournament was the season-opener for the Panthers. Additionally, two wrestlers competed individually at the Virginia Tech Southeast Open in Salem, Virginia.

THE BASICS
Gannon and West Liberty, both NCAA Div. II institutions, placed first and second in the team race, scoring 212 and 172.5 points, respectively. Ohio Northern (153), Ferrum (99.5) and host Mount Union (97.5) rounded out the top five in a field of 10 teams.

Ferrum entered 22 wrestlers in the tournament, and came away with 10 top-eight finishes. The Panthers' top placewinners were Robert Owens Jr. (157 lbs) and Joseph Toner (184), who both each earned fifth placed. Placing sixth were Joseph Olalde (149) and Franklin Melton (174). Cameron Curva (149), Gabriel Cortes (165), Sam Slate (197) and Deondre Johnson (285) all placed seventh, while Trent Proctor (133) and Josiah Canales (141) placed eighth.

SOUTHEAST OPEN
Seniors Zach Beckner (125) and Rayshawn Dixon (285), both All-Americans and two-time NCAA qualifiers, both competed today at the Virginia Tech Southeast Open, held at the Cregger Center in Salem, Virginia. Dixon, beat a pair of NCAA Division I wrestlers, including a 37-second pin over West Virginia University senior Michael Wolfgram in the semifinals and a 3-2 overtime tiebreak win over Nolen Neves from University of North Carolina.
