Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Smokies Stadium

KODAK, Tennessee -- The Ferrum College baseball team split it's two non-conference games today, beating North Carolina Wesleyan University 18-2 and losing 12-0 in the nightcap to the University of Mary Washington at Smokies Stadium.

GAME ONE: Ferrum vs. N..C Wesleyan
Bryce Thacker's double to right center field scored the first run of the game. With the bases loaded, Russell Golembe smacked a triple to the deepest part of center field, clearing the bases. Gus Chaffin's single off the pitchers glove scored Golembe, putting Ferrum up 5-0. Four of the next five batters walked and drove in a run with the bases loaded, as the Panthers put up 10 runs in the first inning. 

N.C. Wesleyan prevented a shutout with a sac fly to left field in the top of the second, cut the lead to 10-1. Clayton Michael singled to center, driving in Chaffin and then Thacker's single to center field drove in Tyler Mason. Michael scored on a wild pitch, to go ahead 13-1 in the bottom half of the second inning.  The Bishops drove in a run the forth, on a single through the right side.

Golembe drew a walk and then stole second base, advanced to third on an error. He would score on Chaffin's RBI groundout to lead 14-2 after five innings of play. A four run seventh inning, with 3 of the four coming on RBI walks from Mason, Yeaman, and Michael. Shawn Baxter drove in the 18th and final run of the game on a groundout to the pitcher.

GAME TWO: Ferrum vs. Mary Washington
Mary Washington struck first in the third inning with six runs. A walk, two singles, a wild pitch, and a sac fly helped the Eagles take a 6-0 lead. A double to right field added one more for UMW in the seventh. A four-run eighth inning pushed the lead to 11-0 and a sac fly to center in the ninth scored the 12th and final run of the game.
