Panther Women Fall in Conference Carolinas Opener

FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College's women's basketball team dropped its 2025-26 home opener, also the Conference Carolinas opener, to Chowan University tonight at home, falling 68-63 at Swartz Gym.

RECORDS
Chowan 3-1, 1-1 CC
Ferrum 1-3, 0-1 CC

THE BASICS
Chowan jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead before Allyson Cassell would get Ferrum on the scoreboard with a three-pointer at 8:31 of the first quarter. The Hawks extended the lead to 8-3, but Ferrum fought back with a 6-2 run that ended with Sofia Ponce's layup to make it a 10-9 game at 4:47 of the first. Chowan closed the quarter on top 18-13.

Sa'ni Savage's tip-in at 5:47 of the second quarter extended Chowan's lead to eight points at 24-16. A pair of Kleiauna Riddick free throws five minutes later narrowed the gad to 21-28, and the Hawks made a basket just before halftime to take a 33-28 lead into the break.

Cassell made one of two free throws at 7:42 of the third quarter to make it a two-point game at 35-33, but Chowan would widen the lead to 52-42 on a Savage jumper with 1:38 left in the third. Riddick's fast break layup with 2:45 left in the fourth quarter cut the lead to 62-59, but that was as close as Ferrum would get.
