Panther Women Fall on Senior Night to #19 Randolph-Macon

FERRUM, Virginia -- Ferrum College fell to No. 19 Randolph-Macon College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's basketball action, losing 56-49 this afternoon at Swartz Gym. The Yellow Jackets outscored Ferrum 14-1 in the fourth quarter to thwart Ferrum's upset bid.

SENIOR NIGHT
Prior to the game, the Panthers honored five graduating players with a Senior Day ceremony: Taryn Blankenship, Aisha Martin, DeZhenae Stewart, Allessandria Thomas and Asya Williams with a Senior Day ceremony.

THE BASICS
Williams, Stewart and Blankenship each hit baskets, then Stewart drilled a three-pointer to spot Ferrum a 9-4 lead early on. Aisha Martin made two buckets and Allyson Cassell connected on another and the lead was 15-11 Ferrum. Emion Byers hit a jumper to cut the lead to 15-13, but Cassell answered with a three from the top of the key and the lead was 18-13 with 1:41 left in the first quarter.

made a basket for the Yellow Jackets to trim the lead to 18-15, then Maslyn Mosbacher knocked down a three-pointer from the right side to end the first quarter with Ferrum on top 21-15.

Kleiauna Riddick was fouled late in the second quarter and knocked down a free throw to give Ferrum its largest lead so far at 33-22 with 2:45 left before the break. Juliana Park drilled a three-pointer from the left baseline for Randolph-Macon to get the lead down to 33-25 with 2:35 left, then Kagey was fouled and converted a pair of free throws to make it a 33-27 Ferrum lead at the break.

An intention foul and technical foul on Ferrum led to four made free throws by Sam Smith to cut the lead to 36-33 early in the third quarter. The two teams traded buckets and the score was 38-35, then Ferrum's Cassell and Martin knocked down shots to extend the lead to 42-35 with 5:28 left in the third. Riddick drove the baseline from the right side and made a layup off the glass to make it a 48-40 game at 1:26 of the third, then Kagey hit two free throws at the other end of the floor to trim it to 48-42 at the 1:02 mark, and nether team would score after that to close the third.

McKenzie Matheny knocked down a pair of free throws for Randolph-Macon to open the fourth quarter, then Smith and Park had back-to-back threes to put the Yellow Jackets on top for good at 50-48. Neither team would score over the next minute and a half, then Kagey made a layup to push the R-MC lead to 52-48.

Riddick hit one of two free throws at 2:33 to cut the lead to 54-49, but R-MC answered at the other end with a jumper by Matheny and the score was 56-49 with less than a minute left in regulation. The Yellow Jackets held on from there for the win to remain unbeaten in ODAC play this season at 14-0, improving to 22-1 overall.
