Softball Drops Two at #5 Virginia Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia -- Ferrum College dropped both ends of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) softball doubleheader this afternoon at #5 Virginia Wesleyan University, falling 2-0 in the opener and 9-1 in the nightcap at Tom and Betty Broyles Field.

RECORDS
Virginia Wesleyan (30-1-1, 16-0 ODAC)
Ferrum (12-18, 8-8 ODAC)

GAME 1
The opener was a defensive battle, with the two teams combining for just five base hits. Virginia Wesleyan struck for a run in the first inning and the game remained 1-0 until Lacy Campbell stole home in the sixth for the game's final score.

VWU starter Lauren Bible got the win to keep her record in the circle unblemished at 17-0, allowing three hits and striking out three Ferrum batters. Emily Wood (7-7) absorbed the loss after pitching three innings and allowing just two hits, one earned run and a walk, with one strikeout. Autumn McMillen, Lexi Bennett and Macy Bell each had a base hit for Ferrum.

GAME 2
In the nightcap, the Marlins got all the runs they would need in the second inning with a sac fly and an RBI single to make it a 2-0 game. Virginia Wesleyan then exploded for five runs in the third inning, two on Brooke Powell's RBI triple, then tacked on two in the fourth, including one on Powell's RBI double down the left field line.

Emily Hopper blasted a triple to left field in the top of the fifth inning, then Georgia Carter had an RBI single up the middle that allowed Hopper to cross the plate and break up the shutout. Starter Hannah Hearl (6-1) picked up the win for the Marlins, tossing a complete five-inning one-hitter with seven strikeouts. Ferrum starter Wynema Thomas (1-3) took the loss after surrendering nine hits, seven earned runs and a pair of walks over three innings.
