Baseball Splits Non-Conference Twinbill in Tennessee

JOHNSON CITY, Tennessee -- Ferrum College split a non-conference baseball doubleheader with Covenant College, winning the opener 4-2 and losing the nightcap 8-4, this afternoon at TVA Credit Union Ballpark. The two games were part of a three-game weekend series, which included a 13-11 loss to the Scots Friday, April 18.

GAME 1
Sam Cecil's two-run home run to right field in the first inning of the opener put the Scots out in front early. Gregory Melo homered down the right field line in the second inning to tie the game at 2-2. The Panthers than got two runs in the fifth, one each on Carlos Castillo's double to center and Kyle Markowitz's double down the right field line. Castillo closed the game 2-3 at the plate with a double, a run and an RBI.

GAME 2
In the nightcap, the Scots grabbed another 2-0 early lead, this time off Daniel Bell's two-run bomb to right field in the first inning. Castillo doubled down the right field line in the bottom of the frame to drive in a run and cut the lead to 2-1. Covenant scored a run in the second inning, two in the fourth, and three in the fifth to expand the lead to 8-1. Ferrum picked up three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, two on Markowitz's single up the middle and one on a wild pitch, for the game's final score. Tyler Mason, JJ Mulhern and JJ Tyree each recorded two base hits for the Panthers.

UP NEXT
Coach Eric Owens' team will be back in action Tuesday, April 22, at home against Averett University. The Old Dominion Athletic Conference game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start at Panther Field.
