FERRUM, Virginia -- Ferrum College mourns the passing of James "J.P." Puryear '00, a former football player. Puryear passed Saturday, July 19, 2025 at the age of 47 in his residence in Altavista, Virginia.

Puryear played football for the Black Hats under former Head Coach
Dave Davis, who coached the standout linebacker four years from 1996 to 1999. Puryear was a USA South Academic All-Conference selection for the Panthers in 1999.
"JP was one of the finest young men I've ever coached," said Davis. "He led by example and was a model student-athlete for his teammates. My deepest sympathies to J.P.'s family and friends during this time of sadness."
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 23, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at New Prospect Baptist Church Family Life Center in Hurt, Virginia, by Rev. Brady Willis. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2025 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.
