Ferrum College Celebrates Billy Wagner Day

FERRUM, Va. — Ferrum College observes "Billy Wagner Day" on January 21 in honor of legendary Major League Baseball pitcher and Ferrum alumnus Billy Wagner, recognizing his extraordinary athletic career and his enduring connection to the College. His lasting impact on the game of baseball and on humanity through a life defined by generosity, service, and leadership were recognized at the Ferrum College Alumni Awards ceremony last November.

A standout pitcher during his time at Ferrum College from 1991 to 1993, Wagner went on to become one of the most dominant closers in Major League Baseball history—known for getting the most outs at the end of close games. Over an eighteen-year professional career, he earned seven All-Star selections and recorded more than 400 career saves, establishing himself as one of the premier relief pitchers of his generation. His induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame was announced on January 21, 2025 and stands as a testament to his excellence, perseverance, and leadership.

Wagner was officially honored at the National Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2025 induction ceremony on July 27, 2025, in Cooperstown, New York. He made history as the first NCAA Division III player ever inducted into the Hall of Fame and was enshrined alongside Seattle Mariners outfielder Ichiro Suzuki and New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia. The Class of 2025 also includes Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Dave Parker and the late Philadelphia Phillies slugger Dick Allen, all selected by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame web page on Wagner, who graduated from Tazewell High School, describes his journey to becoming "one of the game's greatest closers" after overcoming several hardships growing up in rural Virginia, including a childhood injury that forced him to become a left-handed pitcher. It says he "dominated the opposition" during his record-setting years of playing at Ferrum College and, "when his 16-year MLB career came to an end, no one could deny that Billy the Kid was one of the best."

Wagner's number 13 jersey from Ferrum College is on display at the National Baseball Hall of Fame. He continued to wear the number 13 throughout his professional career and his jersey was also retired by the Houston Astros in 2025.

"Billy Wagner Day is an opportunity to celebrate an elite athlete, a selfless leader, and a proud Panther whose journey reflects the values of Ferrum College," said President Mirta Martin. "From the Panther nation to the highest level of professional baseball, his story continues to inspire our students, our alumni, and the broader community. This celebration affirms Ferrum College's long-standing commitment to developing individuals who lead with excellence, integrity, and purpose—on the field, in the classroom, and in life."

Wagner was inducted into Ferrum College's Sports Hall of Fame in 2003. His wife, Sarah Q. Wagner '94, followed in 2004 in recognition of her outstanding basketball career at Ferrum College. Wagner served as the commencement speaker for Ferrum College's 109th graduation ceremony on May 3, 2025.

On November 15, 2025, the Wagners were honored with the College's Distinguished Alumni Award, the highest recognition bestowed upon alumni for professional distinction, leadership, and meaningful contributions to their communities and/or Ferrum College. They were also inducted into the 1913 Society, honoring their commitment to financial stewardship and the long-term strength, mission, and sustainability of the institution.

Billy Wagner retired from professional baseball in 2010 to spend more time with his family in Virginia. At the Miller School of Albemarle in Charlottesville, he is the head baseball coach. He frequently credits the pivotal role Ferrum College played in shaping his life and career. Billy and Sarah Wagner continue to give back to their alma mater, mentoring students, supporting athletics programs, and opening doors for future Panthers. His journey stands as a powerful example of the College's mission to provide access, create opportunity, and deliver a truly transformational education.
