FERRUM, Va. -- Conference Carolinas has announced its Players of the Week and Ferrum College sophomore
Robert Owens Jr. has been named Wrestler of the Week. This is Owens' first ever Conference Carolinas weekly honor.
In Ferrum's 31-10 Conference Carolinas win over Coker University on Friday, February 13, at home, Owens pinned Matthew Williams in the third period of the 165-pound weight class. He trailed 7-0 in the first period, having to fight off a potential fall for over 90 seconds, then chipped away at Williams' lead with an escape in the first period and a takedown in the second to make it a 7-4 score.
Owens opened the third period with an escape to trim the lead to 7-5. From the neutral position, Owens then used double underhooks to take Williams down to his back at the edge of the mat in front of the Coker bench and secured the fall at 6:04 to complete the comeback.
The win improved Owens' season record to 12-8 overall. So far this season, his stat line includes four falls, two technical falls and one major decision.
