FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College split a Conference Carolinas softball doubleheader with Chowan University Wednesday afternoon at Vickie Van Kleeck Field, winning the opener 3-1 for its first conference victory of the season before falling 1-0 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE
Ferrum earned its first Conference Carolinas win of the season behind a complete-game performance from Emily Wood. The Panthers broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning when Sydney Bisson singled and later scored on Kelsey Marshall's RBI double to right-center field.
Ferrum added two more runs in the fifth inning. Mirenda Shields reached on an error and Kaylee Hughes entered as a pinch runner before Samantha Smith hit a two-run home run to center field to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead. Chowan scored its lone run in the sixth inning when Kyra Helton singled through the left side to bring home Ava Mizell, but Wood worked out of the inning and closed out the game to secure the victory.

GAME TWO
Chowan scored the only run of the game in the top of the first inning. Alexis Denham singled, stole second, and moved to third on a passed ball before scoring on an RBI groundout by Makenzi Curry.
Ferrum's best opportunity came in the third inning when Erika Treusch singled and Kelsey Marshall doubled to right field, but the Hawks recorded the final out on the bases to keep the Panthers off the board. The Panthers threatened again in the seventh inning but could not bring home the tying run as Abby Rutledge finished the complete-game shutout for Chowan.
