Softball Battles in Tight Doubleheader at Erskine

DUE WEST, S.C. -- Ferrum College's softball team dropped both games of a Conference Carolinas doubleheader against Erskine College this afternoon at the EC Complex, falling 6-5 in extra innings in the opener and 7-5 in game two.

GAME ONE
Ferrum opened the scoring in the third inning, taking advantage of an Erskine error before Hannah Hooper delivered a two-run hit to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead. Erskine responded with a solo home run in the fourth and tied the game in the seventh, capitalizing on a Ferrum error to force extra innings.

In the eighth, Ferrum regained the lead with two runs. Laci Garrett helped set the table before Mirenda Shields drove in a run and Emily Wood added an RBI double to extend the advantage to 4-2. The Flying Fleet answered with two runs in the bottom half to even the score.

The Panthers again took the lead in the ninth on Hooper's RBI double, but Erskine responded in the bottom of the inning, using a series of walks and timely hits to score twice and secure the 6-5 walkoff win.

GAME TWO
Ferrum surged ahead in the third inning, plating five runs on six hits. A wild pitch brought in the first run before Hannah Hooper connected on a two-run homer. RBI singles from Kelsey Marshall and Zoey Snead helped the Panthers build a 5-1 lead.

Erskine chipped away with runs in the second and third innings before breaking through in the fourth. The Flying Fleet scored five runs in the frame, using a combination of extra-base hits and Ferrum errors to take a 7-5 lead.

The Panthers finished with 12 hits in the contest and threatened throughout, but were unable to push across any additional runs over the final four innings as Erskine held on for the win.

Ferrum will close out the 2026 season with a Conference Carolinas doubleheader at home against Francis Marion University, Saturday, April 18. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Vickie Van Kleeck Field. Game one will be preceded by a Senior Day ceremony for five graduating players.
