PETERSBURG, Va. -- The Ferrum College women's soccer team opened the 2026 season Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 non-conference loss at Virginia State University.

THE BASICS
Ferrum battled Virginia State through the opening 45 minutes, but the Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute when Morgan Parris found the back of the net.
The Panthers had several opportunities to answer before halftime. Summer Stevens registered a shot on goal in the opening minute. Taylin Gimbel had a shot off the crossbar in the 36th minute. Breanna Herlihy added two first-half shots, including one that was saved by Virginia State goalkeeper Tianna Roberts.
Virginia State extended its lead in the 57th minute when Vita Hochuli scored off an assist from Parris. The Trojans added their third goal in the 85th minute when Erica Mathews found the back of the net.
Ferrum goalkeeper Natalie Dinh kept the Panthers within striking distance throughout the contest, finishing with 13 saves. Dinh made eight saves in the second half and faced 16 shots on goal. Virginia State held a 25-9 advantage in shots. Herlihy led Ferrum with three shots, including two on goal, while Stevens and Gimbel each added a shot on target.
UP NEXT
Coach Erin Saleeby-Dent's team will be back in action on Saturday, September 5th when they travel to face Barton College. The Conference Carolinas matchup is set to kick off at noon.
