FERRUM, VA. -- Ferrum College dropped a 60-56 non-conference men's basketball game at home tonight to visiting Washington and Lee University.
The Generals jumped out to a 10-6 lead early and eventually led by as many as seven points when Isaiah Goodman dropped in a pair of free throws to make it 21-14 with 7:50 remaining in the first half.
Ferrum went on a 9-2 run to tie the game at 23-23 on
Christian Waters' spinning layup with 2:33 to go before halftime.
W&L led 29-26 at halftime, only to see the Panthers go on a 10-2 run to take a 36-31 lead. The Generals used a 12-2 run from there to take a 43-38 lead on Kirk Jones' layup with 11:27 left to play.Â
The Panthers would tie the game three more times, at 43-43 on a
Marcus Mayo jumper at 9:55, at 52-52 on a
Derek Mitchell dunk at 4:05 and at 54-54 on a
Jerrell Wade layup with 3:03 left to play.
Washington and Lee (5-2) closed the game out with a 6-2 run for the win. Ben Heller led the Generals with 17 points, while Zac White had 12. Ferrum got 13 points from Wade, many on slashing drives to the basket.Â
Keith Crump added 11 points and Mitchell had 10 points to go with 14 rebounds. Ferrum out-rebounded W&L 34-32.
Both teams shot 44% from the floor for the game. The win splits a pair of early-season games between the two schools. Ferrum won 59-44 over the Generals Nov. 16 in the Washington and Lee Tip-Off Classic.
Ferrum (3-3) returns to action Saturday, Dec. 6, at home against Davis & Elkins College. The non-conference game tips off at 3 p.m. in Swartz Gymnasium.
