Marcus Mayo had 22 points and
Derek Mitchell had 17 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Ferrum College men's basketball team to a 75-66 non-conference win over Piedmont College this afternoon at home. The Panthers snapped a three-game losing skid with the win.
Ferrum led 37-30 at halftime, but the Lions came back to take a pair of five-point leads. The first lead put Piedmont up 45-40 on a Michael Rubio jumper with 16:18 left in the half, the second put the Lions up 59-54 with 7:18 left in regulation on J.C. Herebia's layup.
Ferrum outscored Piedmont 21-7 from there for the win, 11 of which were by Mayo and eight by Mitchell.
Herebia led Piedmont (5-9) with 26 points on 12-of-23 shooting. Rubio added 16 points in the loss.
Ferrum (7-6) out-rebounded Piedmont 42-34. The two teams both shot 44% from the floor. Ferrum was 85% from the line, but the Lions struggled from the line, shooting just 41%.
Ferrum returns to action Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Averett University. The Panthers open USA South Athletic Conference play with the doubleheader; the women's game starts at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men at 7:30 p.m.
