Winfrey Earns USA South Honor

League Release

FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College defensive lineman Shawn Winfrey has been named Football Defensive Rookie of the Week by the USA South Athletic Conference.  Winfrey earned the award for his play in the Panthers' 19-13 win at Shenandoah University Oct. 24 in Winchester, Virginia.

Winfrey was in on nine tackles against the Hornets, including eight solo and an assisted stop.  One of his tackles went for a loss of four yards.

This is Winfrey's first USA South honor this season.  Also nominated for Football Defensive Rookie of the Week honors were Tyler Harrison of Shenandoah, Wayne Yawn of Methodist University, Anthony Bowie of Averett University, and James Wallace of North Carolina Wesleyan College.

Winfrey joins Ferrum's Kayla Trippeer on this week's USA South Player of the Week list.  Trippeer was named Volleyball Rookie of the Week.

Ferrum (4-3, 2-2 USA South) will be back in action Saturday, Oct. 31, at home against Christopher Newport University.  Coach Dave Davis' team will then host Averett University Saturday, Nov. 7.  Both USA South games kick off at 1 p.m. at W.B. Adams Stadium on campus.
