Ferrum College Honors the Enduring Legacy of Jud Mason

FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College mourns the passing of Mr. Judson (Jud) Phillip Mason — an officer and a gentleman who served our country with honor in the United States Marine Corps, and who had the rare distinction of flying several Presidents of the United States. He was also a beloved member of the Ferrum family whose life embodied the very heart of our mission and motto: "Not Self, But Others."

Jud Mason's commitment to Ferrum College was extraordinary in both length and depth. For 56 consecutive years, he gave faithfully to the institution he loved, making him the longest consecutive donor in the College's history. In recognition of this unparalleled devotion, he was bestowed the Beckham Medallion in 2006, the highest honor the College confers — reserved for those whose service and loyalty leave an indelible mark — and later inducted into the prestigious 1913 Society. A graduate of the Class of 1967, he was also a member of the 1965 national football championship team and was inducted into the Ferrum College Sports Hall of Fame in 1996.

His leadership was equally impactful. Mr. Mason served Ferrum College as a trustee for nearly sixteen years, offering wisdom, steadiness, and a deep sense of responsibility. Most recently, he chaired both the Enrollment and Athletics Committee and the Trusteeship Committee, guiding critical work with humility, clarity, and an unwavering focus on what was best for students and the College's future.

Yet beyond titles and accolades, Jud Mason was cherished for who he was. He was admired, respected, and deeply loved by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His kindness, integrity, and quiet strength resonated across generations, leaving a legacy measured not only in years of service, but in lives touched.

To honor his lifelong dedication and enduring impact, Ferrum College is establishing the Jud Mason Memorial scholarship — ensuring that his commitment to excellence, service, and love for Ferrum College will continue to shape students for generations to come.

Mr. Mason is survived by his beloved wife, Jacquelyn (Jackie) Mason, of 51 years, and by his son Judson. We ask that you keep them in your prayers.

Jud Mason may be gone, but he will never be forgotten. His legacy lives on in Ferrum College, in its people, and in the countless futures he helped make possible.
