FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College led by as many as 12 points in the first, only to see Christopher Newport University post a 67-59 win in USA South men's basketball action this afternoon in Ferrum.
Christopher Newport (15-8, 8-2 USA South) out-scored Ferrum 36-23 after halftime. Davon Barton led the Captains with 15 points, going 2-8 from the floor and 9-9 from the line. Thomas Whinnett had 12 points and eight rebounds, while Michael Green and Brian Hermann had 10 each.
Derek Mitchell had 16 points and 21 rebounds to lead Ferrum (13-11, 6-5 USA South).
Keith Crump had a game-high 21 points, and
Marcus Mayo added 12.
Prior to the game, Ferrum honored its lone graduating senior
Cameron Piper. A 6'5, 185-pound forward from Chesapeake, Virginia, Piper prepped at Deep Creek High School before enrolling at Lewisburg College. He transferred to Ferrum in the fall of 2007 and has played the past two seasons with the Panthers. Piper is the son of Sabrina Piper, who was on hand for the ceremony.
Ferrum returns to action Saturday, Feb. 21 at North Carolina Wesleyan College. The USA South doubleheader begins at 2 p.m. with the women's game. The men's game will follow at 4 p.m.
