FERRUM, Va. --- Ferrum College survived a play-in match of the 2009 USA South Women's Tennis Tournament, defeating #10 seed North Carolina Wesleyan College 6-3 this afternoon at home. The Panthers are the tournament's #7 seed.
Heather Marshall and
Morgan Moran were double winners for Ferrum. Marshall teamed with
Angelina Baaklini for an 8-5 win over Wesleyan's Joanne Youngblood and Meghan Herd at #2 doubles. She then defeated Herd 6-2, 6-4 at #5 singles.
Moran teamed with
Cameron Kolinski to stop Tija Riley and Juliana Richardson 8-3 at #3 doubles, then beat Riley 6-2, 6-1 at #5 singles.
Also winning for Ferrum in singles were
Kiawna Berry and
Lea McMillan. Berry beat Youngblood at #3 singles, while McMillan beat Charis Nkunda at #6 singles. Both won by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores.
N.C. Wesleyan (1-15) picked up wins at #1-2 singles and at #1 doubles. Prior to the match,
Brittany Rodgers was honored during a Senior Day ceremony. Ferrum (4-11) will face #2 seed Meredith College Friday, April 17, in the quarterfinals at 1 p.m. in Burlington, North Carolina.
