BUENA VISTA, Va. -- Ferrum College pulled out a 28-21 non-conference football win over Southern Virginia University this afternoon on the road. The Panthers used a 13-play, 96-yard drive to score the game-winning touchdown.
Tied 21-21 in with 10:28 left in the fourth quarter, Southern Virginia punter Matt Miller pinned Ferrum at its own nine yard line with a solid kick. A personal foul by Ferrum on the play pushed the ball back to the Panthers' four yard line.
Ferrum went 96 yards from there, 61 of which were by fullback
Matt Lucas, and cashed in on quarterback
Matt Dobson's 4-yard TD run to the left side of the end zone with 6:57 showing on the clock. Lucas had runs of 1, 4, 5, 8, 12, and 31 yards on the drive.
SVU opened a 7-0 lead when Sam Trulock found Ryan McGinn with a nine-yard scoring strike in the Knights' first possession at 926 of the first quarter. Ferrum answered right back when
Mike Vann rumbled 47 yards for a score on the first play of Ferrum's ensuing drive for a 7-7 tie.
Trulock would hook up again with McGinn, this time on a 29-yard touchdown pass at 12:04 of the second quarter. It was déjà-vu from there as Dobson connected with Vann on the fourth play of Ferrum's next drive for a 44-yard TD pass to knot the game at 14-14 at 10:48 in the second.
Dobson then found
Makya Jackson for a 54-yard TD pass with 39 seconds left in the first half for a 21-14 halftime lead. Trulock tied the game at 21-21 with a one-yard keeper at 5:09 of the third quarter. Dobson's fourth quarter scamper then sealed the deal for Ferrum.
Lucas rushed 11 times for 98 yards. Dobson was 4-12 passing for 127 yards and two touchdowns and an interception. Dobson also had 47 yards rushing and a touchdown on 15 carries. Defensively,
Dennis Hardy had three solo and four assisted tackles. He was in on a tackle for loss and a sack, and picked off an errant Knight pass and returned it 13 yards.
Trulock was 11-27 passing for 144 yards and two TDs for Southern Virginia (0-5). Quinton Garrus had 82 yards on 13 carries. Matt Miller led the Knights' defense with 10 tackles.
Ferrum (2-1) piled up 369 yards total offense, 242 on the ground. SVU had 232 total yards, 148 passing and 84 rushing. The Panthers totaled 31:39 in possession time, compared to SVU's 28:21.
Ferrum plays next on Saturday, Oct. 3, at North Carolina Wesleyan College. The USA South Athletic Conference for both teams will get underway at 1 p.m. in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
