NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
Tyler Brubaker had 143 yards rushing and a score, but Ferrum College fell 38-31 to Chistopher Newport University in USA South Athletic Conference football action Oct. 6 at Pomoco Stadium.
Marcus Morrast ran for a touchdown and passed for another in the first quarter to spot the Captains a 14-0 lead.
Scott Puschell got Ferrum on the board with a 22-yard field goal at 14:54 of the second quarter, but Mason Studor connected on a 40-yarder at 9:24 of the second to push the lead back to 14 points at 17-3 CNU.
Tim Reynolds and Brubaker had rushing touchdowns for Ferrum next to pull things even at 17-17, but CNU added two scores just befors halftime to widen the lead to 31-17 at the break.
Following a scoreless third quarter, Morrast scored his second rushing touchdown of the night, this one from two yards out, at 10:50 of the fourth quarter to put CNU up 38-17. Ferrum mounted a furious comeback, scoring a pair of touchdowns over a 4:11 span in the fourth to trim the lead to 38-31. Reynolds scored on a 6-yard rush, then found
BJ Jennings for a 12-yard TD reception.
Brubaker rushed 10 times for 143 yards and a score, averaging 14.3 yards per carry. Reynolds rushed 15 times for 75 yards and two scores. Reynolds was 7-of-15 passing for 132 yards and one touchdown for the Panthers (3-2, 1-1 USA South). Morrast was 6-of-9 passing for 133 yards with one touchdown. Morrast also rushed 18 times for 57 yards and two scores.
CNU's Paul Dukes carried the ball 25 times for 132 yards.
Shawn Winfrey led the Panther defensive unit with 14 tackles, including six solo and two for loss.
Marcco McNeal,
Tae Motley Chris Freycinet and
Jatavious Adams had 10 tackles each for Ferrum. McNeal had one tackle for loss and recovered a fumble. Daniel Lewis had eight tackles for Christopher Newport (3-2, 2-0 USA South).
Ferrum returns to action Saturday, Oct. 13, at home against North Carolin Wesleyan College. The USA South game gets underway at 2 p.m. at Adams Stadium. The College will be celebrating Homecoming and Hall of Fame that day.
