Football Tops Southern Virginia 20-7

Box Score

FERRUM, Va. -- The Ferrum College football team posted a 20-7 non-conference win over Southern Virginia University this afternoon at W.B. Adams Stadium.  The win gives Ferrum a 4-1 series lead over the Knights.

Kyle Chambers rumbled in from two yards out to put Ferrum out in front 7-0 with 1:59 remaining in the first quarter.  The teams traded possessions for the remainder of the first half.  Ferrum had an opportunity to add three points with 24 seconds left before halftime, but Scott Puschell's 42-yard field goal attempt was blocked and the Knights ran out the clock.

After trading possessions once again to open the third quarter, Ferrum scored on a 7-yard Tyler Brubaker run at 9:16.  The snap on the ensuing PAT attempt was botched, so Tim Reynolds was forced to make something of a broken play and was intercepted.  Chris Freycinet recovered a fumble on Southern Virginia's next drive at the SVU 39 yard line.  Ferrum went 39 yards in 10 plays, capped by Reynolds' 4-yard touchdown run to put the Panthers on top 20-0.  Ferrum's bid for its first shutout win since 2006 was derailed in the fourth quarter when the Knights' Cam Williams hauled in a 30-yard scoring pass from Mitch Stevenson with 4:44 left to play.

Reynolds went 16-23 passing for 190 yards with two interceptions, and was sacked once.  Reynolds had 97 yards rushing and a touchdown on 18 carries, averaging 5.4 yards per carry.  Stevenson was 14-23 passing for 176 yards and a touchdown, and was sacked six times.  The sack total was Ferrum's highest since a 21-7 win at home over Greensboro Colege in October 2007, in which the Panthers sacked Pride QB Mike Caparaso six times for 53 yards.

Jatavious Adams led Ferrum defensively this afternoon with 11 tackles, including four solo stops.  Tae Motley added seven tackles including a sack.  Matt Gregory had 15 tackles for the Knights (1-2).  Ferrum (2-1) will be idle next week, returning to action Saturday, Sept. 29, at Averett University.  That game will be the USA South Athletic Conference opener for both schools.
