FERRUM, Va. -- Maryville College posted a 63-58 USA South men's basketball win over Ferrum College this afternoon at Swartz Gym. Last season's USA South Player of the Year, Jaumonee Byrd, led to the Scots with 18 points, including 16 points in the second half.
The Panthers jumped out to a 6-0 lead two minutes into the game, courtesy of three-pointers from
Alek Ayer and
Marvin Wilson. Maryville battled back, using a 16-8 run to claim a two-point lead at 8:23. Ferrum closed out the first half with a 15-5 run to take a 29-21 lead at the break. The Scots evened things at the 13:43 mark of the second half, tying the game 33-33 when Spencer Peake made one of two free throws.
Ferrum would later take a six-point lead when
Tyler Mann hit one of two from the line to put the Panthers on top 50-44 with just over eight minutes left to play. Maryville used a 9-0 run from there to claim a 53-50 lead at 5:35, but
Jamal Pullen's three-pointer just seconds later pulled Ferrum even at 53-53. Maryville (7-6, 2-0 USA South) closed out the game with a 10-5 run for the win.
Pullen had 21 points and Mann had 11 for the Panthers. Spencer Shoffner had 16 points and Oscar Butler had 12 for the Scots. Ferrum (4-8, 0-2 USA South) returns to action Monday, Jan. 5, at Shenandoah University. The non-conference game tips off at 7:00 p.m. in Winchester, Virginia.
