Bluefield State Hands Volleyball 3-1 Loss

FERRUM, Virginia -- Ferrum College dropped a non-conference volleyball match tonight at home to NCAA Division II opponent Bluefield State University, falling 3-1 at Swartz Gym. Set scores for the match were 25-13, 23-25, 25-20, 25-22.

THE BASICS
Bluefield State took a 21-12 lead in the opening set, closing it out on a Veronica Butler service ace. Ferrum trailed 17-11 in the second set, but battled back with a 14-6 run to close take the set and even the match at a set each. The two teams were tied at 11-11 in the third set when BSU used a 14-9 run to close the set and grab a 2-1 lead.

Ferrum opened a 5-1 lead in the fourth and final set, including a pair of kills by Sami Kercher and one by Makaila Veney. The Panthers extended their lead to 9-6 on a Taylor Joyner kill a few minutes later, only to see the Big Blue roar back with a 6-0 run to go out in front 12-9. BSU surged in front 23-18, but Ferrum answered with a run that trimmed the score to 23-21, getting a kill each from Joyner and Shelby Waltrip. Saryn Pennell added a kill down the stretch, but the match ended on Kateryna Dashevska's kill for Bluefield State.

Coach Shelbylynn Adair's team will be back in action Saturday, September 17, in a non-conference tri-meet at Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, North Carolina. The Panthers face Carolina University at 1:00 p.m., then take on host Pfeiffer at 3:00 p.m.
