Softball Drops Doubleheader to Mary Baldwin in Home Opener

FERRUM, Virginia -- The Ferrum College softball team dropped both games in today's doubleheader against Mary Baldwin University, 5-4, and 8-6 in the home opener at the Vickie Van Kleek Softball Complex.

THE BASICS
Makayla Fincanon drove in the first run of the game on a single to left field. Izzy O'Bannion got Mary Baldwin on the board with a single to center field. Olivia Gagne drove in two runs on a triple to right center, giving the Fighting Squirrels a 3-1 lead.

Laney Jo Patterson hit a triple of her own to make it a 3-2 game. Lyndsey Sears hit a two-run homerun to right center and give the Panthers a 4-3 lead. Sam Charles hit the go-ahead two-run homerun in the top of the sixth to right center.

In game two, Skyler Swaney doubled to right center with the bases loaded and scored on Macie Bell's single to give Ferrum a 4-0 lead after the first inning. Allison Crum doubled to center field and drove in a run. O'Bannion singled up the middle, to drive in a run. Mary Baldwin would add two more runs in the second to tie things 4-4.

Sears belted her second two-run homerun of the day to left center, giving the Panthers a 6-4 lead. Crum hit the go-ahead two-run double in the top of the seventh, 7-6. Sam Grimsley singled to left field to bring in an insurance run, 8-6.
