Panthers Sweep Salem in Softball Doubleheader

WINSTON-Salem, North Carolina -- Ferrum College earned a non-conference softball doubleheader sweep today on the road over Salem College, taking the opener 8-1 and the nightcap 9-2 at Blixt Field.

RECORDS
Ferrum (7-5)
Salem (0-12)

THE BASICS
Lyndsey Sears went 3-4 with a grand slam in the opener and struck out 11 batters to get the win in the circle. Ferrum got all the runs it would need in the second inning, one on Breanna Weaver's RBI single up the middle, then four more on Sears' homer over the center field fence.

The Panthers got two more runs in the fourth inning, one on a fielding error and one on a groundout, then another in the sixth on Makayla Fincanon's RBI single to left field.

Fincanon's RBI single up the middle in the first inning drove in a run to open the nightcap, then Erin Nelson executed a perfect bunt single in the fourth to drive in another run and give Ferrum a 2-0 lead. The Spirits responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but Ferrum exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning to break the game open.

Starter Emily Walker pitched four innings to get the win, then Sears came on to pitch the final three innings with five more strikeouts to close it out and earn a save.
