Marlins Hold On, Nip Ferrum in ODAC Play

FERRUM, Virginia -- Liam Murphy had four goals and three assists to lead Virginia Wesleyan University to a 12-8 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's lacrosse win over Ferrum College this afternoon at W.B. Adams Stadium.

THE BASICS
The Panthers drew first blood, with Tommy Jackson scoring a pair of goals at 10:22 and 0:51 of the first quarter. Daniel Auxier got Virginia Wesleyan on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal at 9:52 of the second quarter. It was the first of five unanswered goals for the Marlins, who led 5-2 at the break.

Virginia Wesleyan added a pair of goals to open the third quarter and extend the lead to 7-2, but Jacob Carroll netted back-to-back goals for the Panthers at 8:13 and 4:26 and Jackson added a goal at 1:37 to cut the lead to 7-5.

The Marlins added a goal at the end of the third quarter, then opened the fourth with a quick goal to go up 9-5. Nathan Piggott and Terrance Scales scored goals at 7:34 and 6:59, respectively, to make it a 9-7 game. VWU's Kris Barnum scooped up the ball off the next face-off and sent a rocket past Ferrum goalkeeper Brody Johnson, then the Marlins added two more goals to make it a 12-7 lead. Piggott scored the final goal of the game for Ferrum with 3:14 left to play.
