Baseball Posts Comeback Win Over Alfred State

FERRUM, Virginia -- Ferrum College picked up a non-conference baseball win over Alfred State College in the third game of a three-game weekend series, winning 20-11 this afternoon at Panther Field.

THE BASICS
Alfred State scored two runs in the top of the first inning, but Ferrum answered with a run in the bottom half of the frame when Clayton Michael doubled to left center and drove in Tyler Mason.

The Pioneers picked up three runs in the second inning, including two on Jack Curabba's RBI double down the right field line. ASC tacked on a run in the fourth to make it a 6-1 game.

Ferrum responded with six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, including Kyle Markowitz crossing the plate on a wild pitch, an RBI single through the left side by Bryce Thacker and a two-RBI single to center field by Shawn Baxter to put the Panthers out in front 7-6 after four full innings.

Alfred State scored a run in the fifth to tie the game at 7-7, only to see the Panthers scratch out four runs in the bottom of the inning. Michael had an RBI single through the left side, Thacker belted a two-RBI double down the third base line and the Panthers scored a run off a fielding error for an 11-7 lead. David Yeaman's sac fly to center field in the sixth extended the lead to 12-7 after six full innings.

Alfred State picked up two runs in the seventh inning off Anthony Snyder's groundout RBI to third base and Tyler Korsky scoring on a wild pitch to trim the lead to 12-9. Ferrum plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh on Markowitz's RBI double down the left field line to score two and another run off an error to make the score 15-9. 

The Panthers exploded for five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, including two off Markowitz's tripe to right field and a Russell Golembe single to second base. The Pioneers picked up two runs in the top of the ninth inning for the final count.

UP NEXT
Coach Ryan Brittle's team will be back in action Saturday and Sunday, February 24-25, at home against Wittenburg University. The two teams will play a non-conference doubleheader Saturday starting at 2:00 p.m., followed by a single game Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
