Ferrum Splits Baseball Doubleheader with Wittenberg

FERRUM, Virginia -- Ferrum College split a pair of non-conference baseball games with Wittenberg University this afternoon at Panther Field, taking the opener 14-10 before dropping the nightcap 13-4 at Panther Field.

GAME ONE
Wittenberg scored three runs in the second inning of the opener to grab the early lead. Ferrum came back to score three in the bottom of the second to tie the game, including an RBI single down the left field line from Russell Golembe and an RBI double  to left field by Mason Moffett. The Tigers scored a run each in the third and fourth, then Mason's sac fly to right in the bottom of the fourth drove in a run and it was a 4-3 Wittenberg lead after four full innings.

Ferrum picked up three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on Clayton Michael's RBI bunt single, a throwing error and Bryce Thacker's sac fly to right t make it a 7-5 Ferrum game heading into the sixth. Both teams scored a run in the sixth inning to make it an 8-6 game. The Tigers then scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning to grab a 10-8 lead. Ferrum exploded for six runs in the bottom of the eighth, including a Kyle Markowwitz RBI single to left field, a two-RBI single up the middle by Golembe, an RBI single through the right side by Benjamin Thomas and am RBI sac bunt by Moffett for the final count. Reliever Matt Sheppard pitched two innings to get the win.

GAME TWO
The Tigers scored a run in the first single off an RBI single, but Ferrum returned the favor with four runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Panthers got a run on a wild pitch, two on Markowitz's bases-loaded walk and Shawn Baxter's 2-RBI double to right field.

Wittenberg picked up a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning on a sac fly and an RBI single and the score was 4-3 Ferrum after five full frames. The Tigers erupted for two runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and two in the seventh to take an 8-4 lead, then picked up five more runs in the ninth for the final count.
