Baseball Falls at Home in ODAC Play

FERRUM, Virginia -- Shawn Baxter went 3-5 with a home run and four RBI for Ferrum College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) home baseball loss to Hampden-Sydney College. The Panthers fell 14-11 this afternoon at Panther Field.

RECORDS
Hampden-Sydney (5-9, 1-3 ODAC)
Ferrum (9-6, 2-2 ODAC)

THE BASICS
Baxter's RBI single and Seth Shannon's home run in the bottom of the first inning put Ferrum in front 2-0. Hampden-Sydney scored a run in the second, then exploded for nine runs in the top of the third inning to go out in front 10-2. Ferrum rallied to pick up three runs in the bottom of the frame on RBI singles by Tyler Mason and Baxter, and a sac fly by Shannon to cut it to 10-5 after three full innings.

The Tigers picked up two in the top of the fourth inning to extend the lead to 12-5, but Carlos Castillo's sac fly and Baxter's two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth kept the game close at 12-8. HSC picked up two more runs in the eighth and Ferrum answered with three in the bottom of the inning, but that's all either team would get. Mason closed the game 4-5 at the plate with a triple, three runs and an RBI. Tyler Smith (1-1) absorbed the loss after pitching a third of an inning, allowing five hits and three earned runs.
