Big First Innings Lead to Doubleheader Sweep

FERRUM, Virginia -- Shawn Baxter went 4-7 on the day with two doubles, two runs and six RBI to help lead Ferrum College to a non-conference baseball sweep over visiting Wilson College. The Panthers took the opener 10-0, then earned a 16-2 win in the nightcap at Panther Field.

GAME ONE
Ferrum scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning, including a two-RBI single up the middle by Baxter, an RBI single by Gregory Melo, and a sacrifice fly by Jorge Olivo. Baxter closed the game 3-4 at the plate with a double, a run, four RBI and a stolen base. Carlos Castillo went 2-4 with a pair of runs and a stolen base. Starting pitcher Kaleb Tischler earned his first win of the season, throwing two innings and allowing one hit and two walks with two strikeouts. Five Ferrum pitchers combined to allow just three hits.

GAME TWO
The Panthers exploded for eight runs in the first inning of the nightcap. Castillo started it off with an RBI double, followed by Mason Moffett's RBI single and Kristian Barcroft's two-RBI double. Jorge Olivo had an RBI single, then JJ Mulhern's single drove in two more runs. The Panthers tacker on three runs in the third inning, including two on Kyle Markowitz's triple to left center.

Wilson's Ty Smith broke up the shutout when he drove a ball over the right field fence for a solo homer in the fourth inning. The Phoenix added a run in the sixth to trim the lead to 12-2, but Ferrum added four runs in the bottom of the frame for the final score. Starter Brayden Weeks earned the win, allowing no hits, runs or walks over two innings, while striking out two batters. Seven Ferrum pitchers combined to allow just six base hits, with 10 strikeouts.

UP NEXT
Coach Eric Owens' team will be back in action Saturday, March 8, at Eastern Mennonite University. The Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader is scheduled for a noon start in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
