Softball Drops Two in Raleigh

RALEIGH, North Carolina -- Ferrum College played a pair of non-conference softball games this afternoon at the Triangle Collegiate Softbal Tournament, held at Walnut Creek Softball Complex. The Panthers opened with an 8-0 loss to Maryville College, then fell 7-6 to Muhlenberg College in the nightcap.

GAME ONE
Maryville scored a run in the first inning, then exploded for seven in the second to break the game open. The Scots then scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game. Emily Hopper, Sophia Peters, Mirenda Shields and Nicole Emerson each had a base hit for the Panthers. Maryville's Sydney Dickinson pitched 5.1 innings and struck out eight batters, while Brecca Williams had a pair of home runs.

GAME TWO
In the nightcap, Ferrum jumped out to an early lead to open the game on RBI singles by Riley Young and Sophia Peters, then Young stole home to make it a 3-0 lead. Muhlenberg scored a run in the bottom of the inning for a 3-1 Panther lead after one full inning. Lexi Bennett and Emily Hopper each had an RBI single to push the lead to 5-1, then Muhlenberg's Skyla Campisi had a solo homer in the bottom of the frame and Ferrum's lead was 5-2. The Mules picked up two runs in the fourth inning an an RBI double, then Ferrum scored a run on a throwing error in the sixth inning and the lead was 6-4 headed into the bottom of the seventh inning. In the bottom of the seventh, the Mules scored a run on a ground-out, then scored two on an error to walk it off.

UP NEXT
Coach Joshua Freeman's team will be back in action Sunday, March 9, for two more games at Walnut Creek Softball Complex. The Panthers open play at 9:30 a.m., then finish the day with a 2:30 p.m. game with Marymount University.
