Baseball Drops Two at #2 Lynchburg

FERRUM, Virginia -- Ferrum College dropped both ends of an Old Doninion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader to University of Lynchburg today, falling 5-3 in the opener and 7-3 in the nightcap this afternoon at James C. Cox Field. The Hornets are currently ranked #2 in the nation by D3baseball.com.

GAME 1
Lynchburg scored a run each in the first and second innings of the opener to grab the early lead. Shawn Baxter's RBI single to center field in the top of the third drove in a pair of runs to tie the game. The Hornets picked up a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to go back out in front 5-2, then Carlos Castillo's RBI single to left in the seventh gave Ferrum's its last run. Tyler Mason was 3-5 at the plate with a run. Reliever Brayden Weeks (1-1) absorbed the loss after pitching 2.2 innings and allowing four hits, three earned runs and a pair of walks.

GAME 2
Ely Elliott reached on an error in the third inning of the nightcap, allowing Castillo to score from third and the Panthers owned a 1-0 lead. The Hornets answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, including a Connor Moore three-run shot and a squeeze play at the plate, then added a pair of runs in the sixth to widen the lead to 6-1. Kyle Markowitz had a solo homer for the Panthers in the top of eighth, but the Hornets picked up a run in the bottom half of the frame to make it a 7-2 game after eight full innings. Jackson Hutchison's RBI single to left-center in the top of ninth accounted for the final run of the game. Tyler Mason, Castillo and Markowitz each had a pair of base hits for the Panthers. Starter Carson Wetmore (0-1) was saddled with got the loss after allowing four hits and four earned runs over three and a third innings of work.

UP NEXT
Coach Eric Owens' team wil be back on the diamond Tuesday, April 8, at Guilford College. The ODAC game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start at Edgar H. McBane Field in Greensboro, North Carolina.
