Jones' 33-Point Night Leads Ferrum Men Past Barton

WILSON, N.C. — Ferrum College's men's basketball team picked up a hard-fought 81–76 win over Barton College in Conference Carolinas play Friday, January 30, at Wilson Gymnasium.

THE BASICS
The win gave Ferrum a sweep of the home-and-away Conference Carolinas series this season. The Panthers also won 79–78 over the Bulldogs January 7 at home. 

The first half was a back-and-forth affair with nine lead changes. Barton built a nine-point lead when Trey Fields hit a three-pointer to make it 45–36 with 1:57 left in the first half. Gerren Jones had a pair of layups for Ferrum to cut the lead to 45–40 at the break. 

The Bulldogs went on a 13–5 run in the first few minutes of the second half, taking a 13-point lead, 58–45, on a Fields layup at 14:37. Amaris Hunt and Jones started a run for the Panthers with back-to-back three-pointers. Jones would hit another trey, then Rodrigo Farias got Ferrum to within three points after he sank a pair of free throws. Jones then drilled another three-pointer at 10:40 to tie the game at 59–59. 

Two more jumpers by Jones, followed by a layup each by Abdulh Diaby and Farias, put Ferrum on top 68–63 at the 6:47 mark. The Panthers stayed in front down the stretch and held on for the league road win.

Coach Pat Corrigan's team will be back in action Wednesday, February 4, at King University. The Conference Carolinas doubleheader will feature the women's game at 5:30 p.m. and the men following at 7:30 p.m. in Bristol, Tennessee.
