FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College swept a nonconference doubleheader against University of Virginia's College at Wise on Tuesday afternoon at Panther Field, earning 9-4 victories in both games.

GAME ONE
Ferrum used timely hitting and a big fourth inning to secure a 9-4 win in the opener. After taking a 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI single from Tyler Mason, the Panthers broke the game open in the fourth. With the bases loaded, Jayden Singleton delivered the biggest swing of the game with a grand slam to extend the lead to 5-0.
UVA Wise chipped away with a run in the fifth and three in the sixth to make it a one-run game, but Ferrum answered immediately. The Panthers scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by RBI hits from CJ Kemmerer, Smith Dickinson, and Mason to pull away for good.
Steven Ritchie earned the win in relief, improving to 4-0 on the season, while Ferrum's pitching staff combined for eight strikeouts.

GAME TWO
Ferrum completed the sweep with another 9-4 victory, using a four-run fourth inning to take control. The Panthers got on the board in the first on a sacrifice fly by Major Marshall. After Virginia-Wise took a 2-1 lead in the second, Ferrum responded and surged ahead in the fourth inning.
Eli Elliott doubled home a run before Jachob Walters added an RBI single. Niko Papathanasiou followed with a two-run single to cap the four-run frame and give Ferrum a 6-2 advantage. UVA-Wise closed the gap to 6-4 in the fifth, but Ferrum once again responded with a three-run inning. CJ Kemmerer, Smith Dickinson, and Walters each drove in runs to extend the lead.
Connor Courtney earned the win in relief with two scoreless innings, while the Panthers pitching staff recorded nine strikeouts.

The Ferrum College baseball team, led by head coach Eric Owens, travels to Bristol, Tennessee this weekend for a three-game series against King University. The series begins Friday, April 3, with a doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m., followed by a single game on Saturday.
