Baseball Rallies Twice to Sweep UVA Wise

WISE, Virginia - Ferrum College rallied late in both contests to sweep a non-conference baseball doubleheader against UVA Wise. Ferrum won game one 5-4 and came back to win game two 6-5.

GAME ONE
Ferrum struck first in the second inning on a solo home run from Niko Papathanasiou before weathering multiple UVA Wise rallies to secure a 5-4 victory in the opener.

After UVA Wise answered with a two-run homer in the second, Ferrum responded in the third. Tyler Mason doubled and later scored, while Papathanasiou delivered an RBI single to give the Panthers a 3-2 advantage. An RBI single from Gage Miller in the fifth extended the lead to 4-2. UVA Wise tied the game in the seventh with a two-run home run, but Ferrum answered in the eighth. Smith Dickinson worked a walk and moved into scoring position before Garrett Pancione lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing home the go-ahead run.

Campbell Short earned the win in relief, and Steven Ritchie shut the door in the final frame, striking out two to collect the save as Ferrum held on for the 5-4 decision.

GAME TWO
The Panthers completed the sweep with a 6-5 comeback victory in the nightcap, using a pair of home runs and late-inning execution to secure the win.

UVA Wise built an early 4-0 lead through two innings, but Ferrum answered in the third. Deiondre Seigla drew a walk ahead of a two-run home run from Mason to cut the deficit in half. Later in the inning, Miller singled home CJ Kemmerer to make it 4-3.

After UVA Wise pushed the lead to 5-3 in the fifth, Ferrum chipped away again in the sixth when Jachob Walters delivered a pinch-hit RBI double to bring the Panthers within one. The decisive swing came in the seventh. Kemmerer reached on a bunt single before Miller launched a two-run home run to left field, giving Ferrum its first lead of the game at 6-5.

Carter Liverman earned the win with a scoreless sixth inning, and Hunter Carlson secured his second save of the season with a scoreless seventh, striking out two to finish the sweep.

Coach Eric Owen's team returns to action Friday, March 6 when they travel to Georgia to take on Young Harris in a Conference Carolinas three game series. On Friday, the teams will play a doubleheader starting at 12 noon.
