FERRUM, Va. -- Dontavious Watson rumbled 25 yards down the right sideline to score the game-winning touchdown for Averett University in a 34-28 triple-overtime win over Ferrum College this afternoon at W.B. Adams Stadium.
Ferrum scored first on a 14-yard run by QB
Matt Dobson with 37 seconds left in the first half. Averett's Jeremy Dixon tied things at 7-7 on a 73-yard punt return at 9:48 of the third quarter, and Anthony McCall made it 14-7 Averett on a three-yard run with 3:44 left in the third.
Dobson scored on a one-yard run with 57 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime.
The two teams traded scores in the first and second overtime periods. The Cougars' Anthony Squilini scored on a five-yard pass from Cody Ladutko, while Watson punched it in from three yards out. Ferrum scored its OT touchdowns on one-yard and eight-yard runs by
Mike Vann.
In the third OT period, Dobson's fumble at the Averett 18 yard line was recovered by Asaad Graham, setting up Watson's game-winning score.
Dobson had 171 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 26 carries. He also threw for 71 yards on 6-14 passing. Watson had 88 yards on 18 rushes, including two scores.
Defensively,
Willie Taylor led Ferrum with nine tackles, including four solo stops and a pair of tackles for loss. Zane Cooper was in on 11 total tackles for Averett, including a sack and a tackle for loss.
Ferrum (4-5, 2-4 USA South) is back in action next Saturday at Maryville College. Averett (7-2, 5-1 USA South) will play for the USA South title and a bid to the NCAA playoffs next weekend when it hosts North Carolina Wesleyan College.
