SALEM, Va. -- Defiance College held off a strong run from Ferrum College to post an 87-85 non-conference men's basketball win in the first game of the Morris Cregger Invitational at Roanoke College this afternoon.
Ferrum trailed by as many as 21 points with just over 12 minutes left to play but whittled the lead down to three points twice.
The Panthers' final chance came with five seconds remaining as Defiance's Mike Floyd missed both free throws. Two Ferrum players couldn't control the rebound off the second miss and Floyd ended up recovering the loose ball, was fouled and made two free throws to put the Yellow Jackets up by five.
Jerrell Wade hit a 55-foot at the final buzzer as the buzzer sounded to bring about the final score. Wade had 25 points for Ferrum, as did
Daryl Hart.
Garry Brandt added 16 points and 10 rebounds, while
Nick English had 13 points. Floyd led the Yellow Jackets with 17 points, while Kevin Tietje had 14 points, and Anthony Brown and Heath Armstrong had 13 each.
Ferrum (5-6) will face Roanoke in the consolation game Sunday at 3 p.m. The Maroons fell 74-55 to Ohio Wesleyan University this afternoon. Defiance and Ohio Wesleyan will play for the title at 1 p.m.
