FERRUM, Va. – Ferrum College dropped a USA South Athletic Conference football game at home to Maryville College, closing the 2010 season with a 23-21 loss. The game was the finale for 17th-year Head Coach Dave Davis.
The Panthers scored first when WR
Tyler Brubaker tossed a pass to QB
Marcus Mayo at 6:18 of the first quarter. The play unfolded when Mayo took the snap and handed the ball to RB
Steven Harris, who was headed towards the left side of the line before handing it off to Brubaker on the reverse. Brubaker pulled up and toss the ball to Mayo in the right corner of the end zone.
Maryville would score three times in the next 1:52 to take a 16-7 lead. With seven second remaining in the first quarter Chad Brooks scored on a 5-yard run. Mayo fumbled on the second play of Ferrum's next possession and the Scots recovered at the Ferrum 20 yard line. Four plays later, Andrew Noboa split the uprights from 32 yards out to give Maryville a 10-7 lead at 14:48. Harris lost control of the ensuing kickoff, Jacob Berwind recovered for the Scots at the Ferrum 12 yard line, and two plays later Brooks scored on a 3-yard run. The PAT was no good on Brooks' second score.
Late in the first half, Maryville took over with 1:10 left on its own eight yard line for what looked like the last possession of the first half. The Scots could not move the ball and coupled with three Ferrum timeouts, turned the ball back over to Ferrum 39 second left in the half. Mayo found a wide-open Brubaker for a 49-yard score to trim the lead to 16-14.
Wes Idlette put the Scots up 23-14 at the 11:44 mark of the third quarter when he hauled in a 16-yard touchdown pass from Dustin Williams.
Vince Munch scored on a 33-yard pass from Mayo with 1:45 left in the third for the 23-21 final count. Maryville (4-6, 3-4 USA South) ate up the clock in the fourth quarter, holding the ball for over 13 minutes. Ferrum would earn just one first down in the fourth quarter.
Mayo was 8-13 passing for 222 yards and two TDs, and was sacked six times. Williams was 18-36 for 200 yards and a score. He was sacked three times and tossed one interception. Brooks closed with 135 yards rushing and two TDs on 25 carries. Ferrum's running game was held to 21 yards.
Tremaine Whitney had nine tackles for Ferrum (4-6, 4-3 USA South), including six solo and one for loss. Jamie Owen had eight tackles for Maryville, including four for loss and three sacks.
Davis announced in the preseason that he would retire at the end of the year. He closed his 17-year career with a 87-79 coaching mark. Davis came to Ferrum in 1984 from East Carolina University and worked 10 season under Hank Norton, including the last five as Defensive Coordinator. He was named head coach following Norton's retirement in 1993. Davis steered Ferrum to an NCAA Division III playoffs berth in 2005, finishing 9-2 that season. Ferrum was the #1 rushing offense in the nation in 2005, and his 2000 team topped the nation in total defense. Davis' successor has yet to be named.
