FERRUM, Va. -- After tonight's 66-64 non-conference Ferrum College victory over visiting Washington and Lee University, the free throw lines at Swartz Gym may need to be repainted. Both teams combined to shoot 58 free throws, including the Panthers blistering 77.8% on 21-27 shooting.
Ferrum found itself down by 10 with 11:48 left to play, after Kyle Bond drained a pair of free throws to put W&L on top 42-32. The Panthers clawed back into the game over the next six minutes and tied the game at 51-51 on a
Daryl Hart jumper with 5:38 remaining.
Keith Crump, who finished with 18 points, put Ferrum ahead with a jumper at 2:45 to give Ferrum a 57-56 lead.
John Guest tied the game at 57-57 when he hit one of two free throws at 1:22.
Marcus Mayo hit a jumper and Hart converted a pair of free throws to give Ferrum a 61-57 advantage with 42 seconds left in regulation. J.D. Ey sank two free throws for the Generals (5-2) to cut the lead to 61-59 with :24 showing on the clock. Crump then hit a pair of free throws to push the lead back to four with 23 seconds left. Jeremy Adkins was hacked while attempting a three pointer and converted all three free throws to close the gap to 63-62 with 17 seconds remaining.
Lamont King made one of two free throws to put Ferrum ahead 64-62 with 15 seconds left, then John Rice hit the equalizer on a driving layup to tie the game at 64-64 with 12 seconds left in the game.
King drove the length of the floor and missed the layup, but was fouled on the play and sank two clutch free throws to seal the win for the Panthers (6-0).
Behind Crump in scoring were Mayo with 12 points and King contributing 11. Ey led Washington and Lee, posting a double-double: 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Ferrum will break for finals and return Dec. 16 at home against Piedmont College. The non-conference game tips off at 2 p.m. Coach Bill Tharp's team will close first semester action at home Saturday, Dec. 18, against Lancaster Bible College. That game is slated for 1 p.m.
