NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Ferrum College men's basketball team dropped a 61-59 USA South game at Christopher Newport University this afternoon. CNU won on a three-pointer by Theo Baker with 22 seconds left in regulation.
Nick English's layup with 1:43 remaining gave Ferrum a 58-56 lead, but the Captains knotted the score at 58-58 on a Mark Blasingame jumper with 1:14 left to play. Ferrum turned the ball over on its next possession, leading to Baker's winning three-pointer.
Derek Mitchell led Ferrum with 16 points and 21 rebounds. For Mitchel, it was his 10th straight double-double and the 17th overall this season. English finished with 14 points, while
Jerrell Wade had 13.
Christopher Newport (10-12, 5-5 USA South) got 13 points from Baker, and 10 points each from Mike Green and Brian Hermann.
Ferrum (10-14, 4-7 USA South) closes out regular season play Saturday, Feb. 20, at North Carolina Wesleyan College. The USA South game tips off at 6 p.m. in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
