Baseball Beats Averett 16-8 to Stay Alive

BURLINGTON, N.C. -- Caleb Dorton had a pinch-hit grand slam home run in the seventh inning to help Ferrum College beat Averett University 16-8 in an elimination game at the 2010 USA South Baseball Tournament.

Justin Franklin hit his 13th home run of the year, a solo shot in the sixth inning.  He went 4-4 this afternoon with a run and four RBI.  Sammy Holloway went 3-5 and scored three runs.

Starter Brian Bowles got the win for Ferrum, scattering seven hits and five earned runs over 5.2 innings.  Bowles walked four and struck out three to raise his record to 3-3..

The Panthers advance to play Christopher Newport University tonight at Burling Athletic Stadium.  The winner will move on to Sunday's title game to face Shenandoah University.
