LYNCHBURG, Va. -- A penalty kick by
Casey Johnson in the 60th minute of play gave Ferrum College a 1-0 non-conference women's soccer win over Randolph College tonight on the road.
The two teams battled to a scoreless draw in the first half before Johnson's PK beat Randolph goalkeeper Victoria Johnson at the 59:16 mark. The Panther defense held the rest of the way, preserving the shutout for Ferrum GK
Katie Hodkinson, who closed the game with six saves in 90 minutes of play.
Ferrum out-shot the Wildcats 21-7 and owned a 3-1 corner kick advantage in the season-opener for both teams.
Stephanie Marshall had a game-high six shots. Johnson registered nine saves in net for Randolph (0-1).
Ferrum (1-0) is back in action Saturday, Sept. 4, at Randolph-Macon College. The non-conference match starts at 3 p.m. in Ashland, Virginia.
