BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Ferrum College dropped a non-conference football game this afternoon, falling 35-24 to Bridgewater College on the road.
Justin Donnelly opened scoring with a 25-yard touchdown run at 7:36 of the first quarter to put the Panthers on top 7-0. Tyler Beiler tied the game with his 57-yard TD reception from Hagan Driskell less than a minuet later.
Scott Puschell closed out the first quarter with a 29-yard field goal to put Ferrum back up 10-7. Beiler and Driskell hooked up again at 8:39 of the second quarter, this time a 58-yard pass play, to give Bridgewater the lead for good at 14-10.
Matt Jarvis scored for the Eagles on an 11-yard blocked punt return to put BC on top 21-10 at 4:58 of the second quarter. Beiler made it 28-10 Bridgewater at halftime when he hauled in his third TD reception of the day, a 38-yard pass from Driskell with 1:13 to go in the half.
Ferrum scored twice in the third quarter, QB
Marcus Mayo at 6:27 on a 76-yard punt return and
Roger Smith on a 33-yard TD pass from Mayo to trim the lead to 28-24. Keenan Tillar capped scoring with a 22-yard TD reception from Driskell with 9:44 left to play.
Driskell had 299 yards and four TDs on 14-21 passing. He threw no interceptions and was sacked four times. Thomas Kate had 112 yards rushing on 21 carries for Bridgewater (3-0). Mayo threw for 153 yards and a score on 9-18 passing.
Tremaine Whitney had five solo and three assisted tackles for the Panthers.
Ferrum (0-3) will next play next Saturday, Oct. 2, when it hosts reigning USA Sough champ North Carolina Wesleyan College in its league opener. The game kicks off at 2 p.m. and coincides with the College's Homecoming Weekend '10.
