FERRUM, Va. — The Ferrum College men's basketball team overcame a first-half deficit by torching the nets in the second half to put away North Carolina Wesleyan College, 90-84, in the battle for the USA South lead.
The hosts shot a blistering 17-29 (58.6%) from the field in the second frame to spark the second half rally. The charity stripe was also kind to the 23rd-ranked Panthers, as the team connected on 32-40 (80%) of their attempts.
Derek Mitchell led both teams with an impressive 30-point outing, connecting on 16-17 (94%) of his free-throw attempts. Keith Crump tallied 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting, while logging 37 minutes of playing time.
J.T. Edwards had an efficient night from the field, shooting 4-of-6, on his way to 14 points. Marcus Mayo contributed another 10, rounding off Ferrum's list of double-digit scorers.
North Carolina Wesleyan (13-6, 5-1 USA South) was led by Ric Yarbrough, who scored a team-high 23 points in the loss.
Domarius Thomas added 18 points, shooting 7-of-10 from the field. Cornelius Snow shot 50% from behind the arc, en route to 16 points.
Ferrum (16-2, 5-1 USA South) will travel to Danville, Va. on Jan. 26, for a showdown with in-state, league foe Averett University. The USA South battle is slated for 7:30 p.m.
