FERRUM, Va. — Coming off its first loss of the season, the Ferrum College men's basketball team opened USA South action in style with a 95-68 thumping of Averett University inside Swartz Gym tonight.
After keeping the contest close the first 10 minutes of the game, Ferrum doubled-up the Cougars (2-12, 0-1 USA South) by going on a 28-14 run, pushing the lead to 43-29 at the break. The Panthers came out in the second half shooting lights out (57.6%). Ferrum attacked in every way possible on its way to building its largest lead, 92-59, with 3:46 showing on the clock.
Once again, the Panthers had five players contribute double-figure scoring efforts. Leading the way was Daryl Hart with 19 points, including three from deep. Derek Mitchell tossed in 16 points and 11 rebounds. Marcus Mayo and Lamont King contributed 12 points apiece, while Keith Crump netted 10.
Ferrum turned 17 Cougar turnovers into 21 points. The Panthers (12-1, 1-0 USA South) also held the advantage in the paint, outscoring Averett, 36-16.
Coach Bill Tharp's club hits the hardwood again Saturday, Jan. 8, against Methodist University. The USA South battle is slated for 4 p.m. in Fayetteville, N.C.
