FERRUM, Va. -- Behind 420 yards of total offense, Ferrum College breezed by Methodist University, 37-17, on Saturday afternoon at W.B. Adams Stadium to remain in the hunt for the regular season conference crown. The Panthers improve to 4-2 overall, 3-0 in the USA South.
Ferrum waisted little time getting on the board as
Dontavious Gilbert hauled in a 10-yard pass from
Marcus Mayo with 9:10 remaining in the first quarter. The next possession, the Panthers drove down the field, but were forced to kick a field goal.
Scott Puschell came on to boot the 45-yarder right between the pipes to put the the hosts ahead 10-0 at the 3:32 mark in the first quarter.
Gilbert would once again reach the endzone, this time from six yards out with 55 seconds remaining, giving Ferrum a 16-0 advantage after one quarter.
Steven Harris cashed in a two-yard touchdown scamper to pad the lead at 23-0. All the Panther defense would allow in the first half was a Tyler Mosko 22-yard field goal with three minutes to go before break.
The Monarchs (1-5, 0-3 USA South) jumped out of intermission and scored their first touchdown of the game on a John Flanagan 16-yard run to make it 23-10 after the extra point. Mayo responded for Ferrum with a quarterback sneak up the middle at the 3:25 mark to keep the 20-point lead.
After a Methodist touchdown with 3:56 remaining in the game, fans got a glimpse of backup quarterback
Tim Reynolds, who knived right throught the heart of the Monarch defense and scored from 39 yards out to provide the final margin.
Mayo completed six passes for 90 yards and a score. The Rockbridge County product also rushed for 98 yards and a score. Gilbert and Harris amassed 67 and 61 yards on the ground, respectively.
Makya Jackson led the receiving corps with two catches for 59 yards.
On the defensive side, Ferrum was led by
Marcco McNeal and
Chris Freycinet with 10 and eight tackles, respectively. Freycinet also added a sack.
Tae Motley and
Tarrell Owens each caught a pick for the Panthers.
Methodist was led by Max Reber who threw for 157 yards and rushed for 22. Vaughn Cross caught five passes for 71 yards. On the other side of the ball, Jacob Hunt had two interceptions.
Coach Dave Harper's squad remains tied with Christopher Newport University atop the USA South with the win. The team is back in action next Saturday, October 22, when the Panthers entertain Greensboro College at 1 p.m. at W.B. Adams Stadium. The game is preceded by the 38th annual Blue Ridge Folklife Festival starting at 10 a.m. Paying for admission into the festival will also get you into the game.
